Families Should Discuss Life Insurance

Commissioner Miller recently announced that Pennsylvania, as a lead state in the multi-state examinations of business practices in the life insurance industry, recovered more than $70 million that had not been paid to nearly 4,300 beneficiaries on life insurance policies in just the first six months of 2015.

While settlement agreements with most major insurance companies providing life insurance should reduce the chances of insurers not properly searching for and paying beneficiaries in the future, Commissioner Miller still urges families to discuss life insurance issues. Talking about what will happen after a loved one dies is never easy, but the Commissioner encourages parents to let spouses, children, siblings, and other beneficiaries know about their life insurance policies to make sure policyholders' wishes are followed and beneficiaries get the benefits they are due.

Mental Health Parity Coverage

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA) is a federal law that requires the same health insurance coverage for mental health and/or substance use disorder (MH/SUD) conditions as patients would receive for coverage of medical/surgical (M/S) services. For more information on the law and how it applies to you or your family, check out our FAQs.
